microfiber: wonder material?

Microfiber cloths are marvelous for many uses. Dampened, they quickly remove pet hair and surface dirt from fabric furniture and do a good job removing food stains from carpeting. They're unbeatable (except for a squeegee in the hands of a professional) for cleaning windows, mirrors, and computer or TV screens (glass only). Keep them handy for wiping down glass shower doors.

Most cleaning books on the market tout the wonders of microfiber towels. A closer look at the fabric will tell you to caveat emptor, which is Latin for "It can wreck your furnishings." Microfiber cloths are made of 80 to 85 percent polyester, which is plastic. Polyester made great loungewear in the '70's, but it makes for lousy cleaning cloths for many surfaces. Plastic will scratch the sealant or coating off any surface with repeated use.

Rule of thumb for using microfiber: if the surface is sealed, contains any kind of hard coat finish, or is painted, do not use microfiber to dust or clean regularly. This applies to marble, granite, and Corian® as well as wood, laminates and painted surfaces (including walls).

Microfiber comes in various grades. The higher grades are more expensive, but you'll be pleased with their performance. Lower grades, although cheaper, tend to leave lint, are not nearly as absorbent, and don't launder nearly as well as the better grades.
