Ah-choo! Allergies and You
If you find people saying “Gezundheit” (or God bless you, and your not at Church, Mass or Synagogue) to you more than anything else, you may have allergies. The causes may be dust mite excretions (how appetizing!), pollen, pet dander—tiny flakes of skin that float in the air—or any other number of pollutants in your home.
Of course, you should see your doctor for the appropriate tests and treatment. But cleaning the air in your home goes a long way toward easing your symptoms. Try these tips:
· Bathe your pet frequently. Even cats get used to this!
· Buy a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which traps small particles and prevents them from spewing out the back of the machine.
· Purchase a HEPA air cleaning machine for your bedroom.
· Vacuum and dust your home frequently; if you’re the one who’s allergic, wear a dust mask while you do this work.
· Reduce or eliminate dust-holding furnishings such as upholstered furniture, drapes, and rugs. Hey, the simple look is in!
Remember, ventilate, ventilate, ventilate. Trapping yourself inside a weather-tight home with pet dander, dust, mold, and other allergens worsens allergic reactions. If you are allergic to tree or other outdoor pollen where opening a window only worsens your symptoms, then a whole-house air purifier might be your solution.
A word of warning: whole house purifiers can be very pricey! You need a specialist to install it as well. But if that’s what keeps your allergies at bay, it may be worth it!
